- Plan it. Place the items that you won’t need to access toward the back of the storage unit and frequently-used items toward the front where they can be easily accessed.
- Map It. As you fill your storage space, draw a simple map of where boxes, furniture and other items are placed within your unit.
- Wrap it. Protect your furniture, mattresses, box springs and appliances with moving blankets or other protective covering.
- Stack it. To make the best use of your storage unit, place larger, heavier at the bottom and stack lighter items up to the ceiling.
- Watch it. To protect your back and help prevent injury, be sure to reach and lift with care and use a stepping stool or ladder to stack and reach items above your head.
- Condense it. Collapse furniture, exercise equipment, shelves and other items that can be condensed for storage. Remove table legs, shelves or other parts and stack chairs seat-to-seat.
- Fill it. Store smaller items inside larger furniture and appliances. For example, store towels, linens, books or CDs inside your refrigerator and wedge the door open so air can circulate.
- Space it. Be sure to leave a small amount of space between the walls of your storage unit and your stored items so that air can circulate.
- Can it. Store shovels, rakes, hoses, tools, paint brushes and other rugged, outdoor items all together inside trash cans or large storage bins.
- Play it Safe. Refillable propane and gas tanks must be purged and sealed prior to storage (follow safety instructions). Properly dispose of toxic, flammable, corrosive and explosive household items.
